And The Best Airport Cooking Meals Are
Now that many airlines have stopped serving in-flight meals, flyers are on their own when it comes to dining in the air. Airport offer grab-and-go options, but some are far better for you than other! Nutrition experts at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) have reviewed the availability of healthy entrees at 12 of the nation’s busiest airports.
The PCRM found that they’ve become more widely available, though some airports continue to lag behind. On the positive side, 7 percent more airport eateries provide at least one healthy entry, and 9 of the 12 airports offered more good choices. But 36 percent of restaurants in these airports do not offer even one entrée that meets PCRM’s definition of a healthy entrée – one that’s low in fat, high in fiber, and cholesterol-free.
Miami International Airport received the highest marks in PCRM’s latest survey. The group approved of menu fare such as the black beans and rice at La Carreta Cuban Cuisine, Casa Bacardi’s grilled veggie sandwich and the vegetable roll at Sushi To Go. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport came in second, with choices like vegetarianstir-fry and almond rice salad at the Mediterranean Grill, tabouli wraps at the Original Airport Café, and veggie fajitas at Diego’s Mexican Village. Denver International Airport placed third, with cholesterol-free options like a portabella mushroom sandwich at Lefty’s Colorado Trails Bar and Grill and vegetable tacos at Cantina Grille. Other airports that scored higher than in previous years included Chicago O’Hare, New York’s John F. Kennedy and Dallas/Fort Worth.
The two airports faring worst were Phoenix Sky Harbor and Las Vegas McCarran. Fast-food outlets outnumber other types of restaurants at both.
